This pass made famous by the Tour de France – it has been crossed 78 times since 1910 with three stage finishes – needs no introduction. Octave Lapize distinguished himself here for the first time in 1910 during a 326 km stage. It also remains the most difficult stage of the Tour de France ever. At an altitude of 2115 metres, the Col du Tourmalet is one of the highest road passes in the Pyrenees to be located entirely in France. It is dominated by the imposing Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2877 m). Since then, the pass has been climbed many times by the Tour de France, crossed more than any other. It was a stage finish in 2010, in the legendary Shleck vs Contador duel.

After a short but intense climb from Argelès Gazost and the Col du Soulor passage, the cliff road pierced in the rock of the Cirque du Litor continues towards the Col de l'Aubisque. This route provides panoramic views of the spectacular Ouzoum valley.

The Luz Ardiden climb is pleasant in summer because there is little traffic and a shady start.
